Connected Beginnings

Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and children to thrive at school

Walking on Country
Walking on country reconnects people with their land and culture through stories

The Connected Beginnings initiative aims to reduce the gap in school readiness and education outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children by providing easier access to early childhood, maternal, child health and family support services.

The initiative also makes it possible for better communication and information sharing between service providers, increasing the quality of care and ensuring that families only need to tell their story once.

As the backbone organisation in Connected Beginnings, Wanslea has six essential functions:

  1. Overseeing strategic direction
  2. Facilitating stakeholder communication
  3. Monitoring data collection and analysis
  4. Managing funding and reporting requirements
  5. Coordinating community outreach and
  6. Communications

We deliver this by working with agencies including health, education and non-government agencies as well as local community representatives to make sure all children have access to early childhood services and support.

Our focus

Cultural safety and recognition

The culture of Aboriginal children and their families is valued, celebrated and reflected in their community

Service integration

Aboriginal children are reaching health and developmental milestones at the same rate as non-Aboriginal children

Governance

A strong and capable group of local leaders (including community) supports decision making and coordination of this work to achieve our goal

How we’re implementing change together

With our partners' support, we've held community engagement sessions, brought together essential health services, created pop-up playgroups and developed partnerships with local schools. Through these partnerships and initiatives, we aim to ensure that Kalgoorlie's Aboriginal families have access to the services and support they need to prepare their children for school.
