Wanslea Cannington (Treasure Island) - Early Learning & Development Centre

Wanslea Treasure Island Early Learning and Development centre was officially opened on March 26 1988 by Dr Judyth Watson and Mr Bob Treasure as a not-for-profit childcare facility. Our service is located in Cannington, approximately 20 minutes from Perth CBD and is opposite Carousel Shopping Centre. We care for children aged from 0 – 5 years of age and are currently approved to have 58 children each day.

Our aim is to provide a welcoming space to nurture and support our children, to grow and develop in their Early Years. Our educators continuously guide and support all children in their care, and build connections with families and the community. We strongly believe in encouraging and empowering children’s learning through offering an indoor and outdoor free flow environment with planned and spontaneous activities to support each child’s interest, routines and developmental needs. Our new outdoor renovation promotes nature-based play and will stimulate learning in a happy and engaged environment. At Wanslea Treasure Island, watching every child strive to learn and grow is an amazing experience and every day is an opportunity to learn something new and be a safe place for all children.

Our service values and promotes respect to the traditional custodians of the land in which we live and love, and include Acknowledgement of the Country in our program and educate children on our history. Our amazing and experienced educators are from different backgrounds, which is valued and promoted to create a strong diverse and friendly environment, as well as a welcoming approach to children and families in our community. At Wanslea, we believe that a successful team will always thrive among positive culture, which contributes to children “Being,Belonging and Becoming”.

We are happy to meet and greet you and your child always.

Mel Flett - Cannington Coordinator

Hello there,

My name is Mel, and I am the proud Centre Coordinator at Wanslea Treasure Island Early Learning and Development Centre. I have been in this wonderfully important Early Education and Care sector for 17 years. I am very passionate about the first five years of a person’s life and ensuring they are provided with the best quality education to kick start their life in the best way possible.

In my role, I have the privilege of working with a dedicated team of educators who share my enthusiasm for nurturing young minds. We believe that every child is unique and deserves an environment where they feel safe, valued, and inspired to explore their world.

I am a mum to a beautiful girl who is vibrant and full of energy. I love being a part of her growth and seeing her become the wonderful little lady she is. In my personal time, I enjoy dancing in the styles of Jazz and Tap and compete in competitions all over Perth. I also play hockey, which I thoroughly enjoy. I’m quite a spontaneous person, often getting in my car and driving down south or to wherever the road takes us. Touring through small towns, old buildings, museums, and natural sites are always a favorite of mine.

I truly believe in a child-centred approach, meaning we listen to and observe each child to understand their strengths, interests, and areas for growth. We collaborate closely with families, recognizing that they are the child’s first and most influential teachers. By building strong, trusting relationships with parents and caregivers, we create a supportive community that enhances each child’s learning journey.

It's incredibly rewarding to witness the milestones and achievements of the children in our care. Whether it's a first word, a newfound ability to share, or a burst of creativity, each moment is a testament to the potential within every child. I am honoured to play a role in these formative years and look forward to continuing to support and inspire the young learners at Wanslea Treasure Island.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is seeing the positive impact we have on the children and their families. Watching a child take their first steps in literacy, seeing their eyes light up when they solve a new problem, and hearing stories from parents about how their child has grown and developed in our care—these moments are priceless and reaffirm my passion for early childhood education.
